SACKVILLE, N.B. - Vancouver artist Heather Passmore will be exhibiting her new body of work, Mis-Takes, for almost a month beginning this Friday.
Mis-Takes is based on partially exposed 35 mm photographs the artist has accidentally taken during the course of her life. Using common bic pens and jiffy markers, Passmore has drawn images on the enlarged photographic images based on the mistakes she has made.
"I am interested in doodling and snapshot-taking as leisurely modes of insight," Passmore has said.
Mis-Takes, as well as a collection titled Travel Shots, will be on display at Seven Lorne Street, the homes of Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre, from Jan. 18 to Feb. 9. A public opening is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday. The opening will be held in conjunction with an opening reception in START Gallery for In-Home Hairdressers & Other Works, Portraits by Alicia Steeves.
Travel Shots, the additional collection for viewing in the exhibition, consists of 180 slides projected as a looping slideshow. The images were selected from a family slide archive donated by Passmore's neighbour who lost his sight and wished to rid himself of his father's slide. The images are those of Jan Letvad, who framed the pictures taken from the driver's seat of his car through the front window and side-view mirror while on road trips across North America, Europe and Japan throughout the 60s and 70s. The slides fade in and out of legibility according to their variable damage by age, abuse, and the effects of mould.
