HALIFAX - The father of a ninth-grader beaten by several students at a Halifax-area junior high school Tuesday says his son has been bullied for almost two years - and the attackers videotaped the latest assault.
Halifax RCMP arrested three 15-year-old boys, all students at Graham Creighton Junior High School in Cherry Brook, N.S., after the 10:15 a.m. beating. They've since been charged with assault.
The Halifax regional school board would not provide information on suspensions or penalties.
The victim's father contacted the Halifax Chronicle Herald on Thursday to say he's frustrated after almost two years of bullying against his 14-year-old son and what he considers leniency against the attackers.
''They (bullies) feel that they can get away with almost anything,'' the father said.
He said his son was a popular junior high student at Duncan MacMillan High School in Sheet Harbour, N.S., but switched in Grade 8 to Graham Creighton and has had a bad time there.
The father claims the boy has been punched in the face, kneed in the groin and called names, and things have been thrown at him.
''We've met with the principal and parents and different people several times about it,'' the man said. ''There's been a few suspensions given out but not a lot of discipline going on.''
The man said police told him they found a video of the beating on a student's cellphone.
Cpl. Joe Taplin of Halifax RCMP wouldn't discuss the existence of any videos of the beating, or the father's comments.
Meantime, an Eastern Shore District High School student was taken to hospital with neck injuries after a noon-hour fight Wednesday.
The 16-year-old boy was ''sucker-punched,'' said Taplin.
Police are investigating an assault causing bodily harm, he said.

For every story like this in the newspaper there are probably hundreds more acrossed the entire province that need to be written.

The school is a monoply that protects itself.

Parents need to come forward more often with their horror stories.

Not to mention the fact that I read this article and all i can think of is all the people that tell me how bad it is that I homeschool my kids...

These same people tell me that my kids will lack important socialization skills .

    ????????????????????????????

The schools have these kids 6 hrs a day 5 days a week 10 months a year... where are the proper socialization skills?

More and more families are choosing to homeschool. It is NOT school at home. It is learning at home, in an environment that allows them to succeed and be inspired.

I feel sickened for the boy that was being bullied, the system failed him as it continually fails others. And I feel bad for the ones that bullied him. They may never learn how to be a part of their community.

Until the Public School System gets it's act together, and until parents refuse to send their kids to school until the schools assumes accountability, homeschooling will gain more and more popularity.
