BLOMIDON, N.S. In a farmers field overlooking the picturesque tidal flats of Nova Scotias Minas Basin, the camera is rolling as Oscar-winner Hilary Swank climbs from a replica of a sleek Lockheed Vega aircraft.
Dressed in a leather flying suit, Swank is wrapping up a scene for the upcoming Hollywood film Amelia a biopic about the famed U.S. aviator Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.
At the edge of the field, people are discouraged from taking photos of the actress, who played a struggling waitress-turned-boxer in Clint Eastwoods Million Dollar Baby, a role for which she won an Academy Award.
A crew of about 250 people started filming in Dartmouth, N.S., last Tuesday. They also filmed scenes on the Northwest Arm in Halifax, Acadia University in Wolfville and in Hubbards, about 30 kilometres west of Halifax.
The Nova Scotia part of the shoot wrapped Monday in Lunenburg County before the crew headed to South Africa for other scenes.
On the weekend, Swank was on the set near Blomidon in central Nova Scotia, acting in a scene depicting Earhart landing in a field in Ireland as she attempted her 1937 flight around the world along the equator.
Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared somewhere over the Pacific on July 2, 1937 after they radioed ships in the area to alert them that their aircraft was out of fuel and no land was in sight.
No wreckage was ever found.
