SUMMERSIDE - Summerside is gearing up for the 54th edition of Lobster Carnival week, set to kick off on Saturday.
Carnival president Vance Bridges said a year-long effort to enhance the annual event has paid off.
"I'm really excited about the new entries in this year's parade," Bridges said. "A number of the floats will have music and I am impressed with the quality of the entries."
Securing pipe bands for the parade is difficult because of scheduling conflicts and costs, Bridges said. But the College of Piping Pipes and Drum band will be making its annual appearance.
Bridges said another major improvement to the Summerside Lobster carnival is with the talent contest. Traditionally, the contest centred around musicians and singers. This year, however, there are four different categories including vocal, instrumental, dance and drama.
Twenty performers have auditioned and will be taking part in the talent competition set for 7 p.m. Saturday, July 18 at Credit Union Place.
Bridges said the public will have a chance to see and hear many of the artists prior to the competition: they will be performing at Spinnakers' Landing this weekend and will be featured on many of the floats in the Lobster Carnival Parade on Monday.
A major draw for this year's lobster carnival will be the Beach Boys performing at Credit union Place on Friday, July 17.
Patrons are invited to come and sing and dance with the long-time popular group in the sand inside the Credit Union Place arena beginning at 8 p.m.
Lobster Carnival will also feature the traditional events that have been popular with the public.
The cardboard boat race, downtown sidewalk sale, lobster suppers at the Summerside Legion, the midway, bike decorating contest, golf tournament, veterans' breakfast and a week of harness racing concluding with the running of the Governor's Plate

While driving down water st. today, July 13th, traffic was being held up as donations were being requested to help pay for the Lobster Carnival Parade. If the City of Summerside cannot afford to pay for professionals then either go with local talent or cancel the whole thing. To ask the taxpayers for more money is the absolute slap in the face. I, for one of many I hope, refused to donate any more money. I donate to charities, not to a parade that the city organizes. We already pay enough in taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this story from Summerside in the Bay of Islands or Summerside in Eastern Newfoundland or Summerside PEI?

I do not have a problem with the Lobster dinners . But the talent show portion was not fair there are people in Summerside over the age of 29 that can still sing. We have never missed the talent show guess what we won't be there this year. Gone are the Good Days at the old Cahill Stadium, the rink used to be packed. Good Luck with your shows I bet your turn out will be down..

Is there anything that can happen in Summerside without someone complaining? maybe we should just not bother with any events ........... Then no one would get offended.

I agree with momfrompei...To Get Real frompei....please view the comments listed under the flyin high article, and you will see you are wrong! Smoking is banned at outdoor events! she is only trying to protect her child so who are you to judge, do you know her personally get real ? And you don't need to blow smoke directly into someone's face for them to receive second hand smoke....that's what's naive! I have participated in the parade and yes some people do put forth a good effort but others just drive their company car in the parade...what planning goes into that? Besides the 'towmater' float and the 1 clown and shriners I seen there wasn't too much to write home about. The bands although good were placed too close to each other and drowned each other out. I hope next year organizers will be stricter enforcing the whole smoking issue!

tougher enforcement on the ban will reduce the turn out....for some reason do gooders think they are far superior to smokers....quite the contrary....your insipid whinning is nothing short of a child like attitude....adults are supposed to be able to reason and understand....PUT IN A SMOKING SECTION AT THE PARADE AND EVENTS...problem solved...smoking is not illegal, never will be ....the goverment needs those tax dollars, especially now. i appreciate your concern and care for your children but you have to share this planet with all of us...ITS NOT YOURS.

in actual fact, it is not illegal to smoke under the age of 19...it is illegal to sell to a minor...if they somehow get cigs...they can smoke anywhere they like...there is no laws against posession of cigaretts for a minor.

you people should be ashamed!!sellin lobster dinners for 25 dollars a plate when the fisherman who caught the lobsters got a miserable 3 dollers a pound for them..who in this world would be stupid enough to sell lobsters for 3 dollers a pound and turn around the next week and pay 25 dollers for 1 lobster.im pretty sure no one will get a 8 pound lobster on their plate.

You're assuming that there is JUST lobster on the plate. Surely there is other food as well. It's lobster dinner, not a lobster .

I agree with me. Its bad enough asking for donations at the grcery stores etc but stopping you on the street with a road block. Next will be the firehall doing it. It really shows us how desperate Summerside is to get our last bit of change.

Once again I was diappointed with the parade...I keep coming back hoping that maybe next year will be better but it seems to be getting worse. My 3 year old was bored and not excited at all. She can watch cars drive by at home.

As for the maritime midway carnival, we had to wait an additional 2 hours for it to open today. It didn't open until 3:00. The prices were through the roof and every other person was smoking or had their pets there. I mean come on it's a carnival, the main audience is children and they are letting people smoke on the grounds, It was disgusting and I spent most of the time trying to keep my children away from the smoke. I definitely will not be bringing my children back next year if they don't put a ban on the smoking.

Just a couple of comments first to me .. I completely agree with you, it is not appropriate to take donations for the parade.. they are set up in the busiest parts of town (marketing genius agreed however, ) there is enough traffic disruption with necessary road construction .. further disruption is unacceoptable and the parade traditinoally has been a free event for families to view together,, when and why did that change?

Secondly to mom please stop your whining about the parade.. were you entered in the parade? So please do not underestrimate the work and planning that goes into preparing entries into the parade.. no wonder your children don't enjoy it... you are sucking all the fun out of it.. how can they enjoy something their mother (who is supposed to set an example) is squawking about how un-entertained she was.. and also to mom .. of course there is smoking at the carnival.. it is an OUTDOOR event... I am a non smoker too but I am not naive enough to think people are not going to smoke in an OUTDOOR venue...yes primarily children are in attendance.. unless people are literally blowng smoke in their faces it should be pretty simple to protect your children from the smoke as best you can.. if you want to reamain in a smoke free environment.. keep your kids at home and stop punishing yourself by attending these family oriented events enjoyed by many families. For Goodness sake you have a3 year old.. take the child to a park, chase butterflies, color pictures and blow bubbles.. do something positive.. try it.. you may like it.. and MAYBE your child will learn to appreciate all of the positive things available for their entertainment instead of approaching everything with a chip on the shoulder like dear old MOM.

James....no smoking is not illegal unless your under 19 but there is a bylaw in Summerside that there is no public smoking at certain locals and the carnival grounds is one of them. And as a former smoker I don't think I'm superior to you....even when i did smoke I respected other people and didn't smoke around their kids.
