AMHERST - The conviction of a Truro bar owner for permitting a game of Texas Hold'em poker should not deter similar games at Dooly's in Amherst.
"We're aware of the charges and the fine but we're moving forward as normal," Rod Wilson said Friday. "That's the direction we've received from our head office."
Kevin Dawe, owner of Calico's Lounge, was fined $1,000 after pleading guilty to permitting gambling at his establishment.
Dooly's has been holding Texas Hold'em events for more than a year but there are strict controls on the games with a portion of the proceeds going to support charities such as the breast cancer foundation.
Wilson said he received a letter from the RCMP's provincial gaming section earlier this year that said he may or may not be charged.
"We've gotten the letter and it's pretty vague," Wilson said. "We're going to continue on until we're told we will be charged."
The bar operator continues to call on the province to come up with an act legalizing the games, even if it means it takes a cut of the winnings.
The alcohol and gaming authority has indicated it's against legalizing poker events because they are not a game of skill, but one of chance and there's no control over money changing hands outside the establishment.
