CHARLOTTETOWN - P.E.I.'s New Democratic Party says the provincial government's wind energy plan should focus on local consumption before any consideration is given to exporting power.
Party Leader James Rodd says the Liberal government has things backwards when it tries to encourage large multinational firms to come to the Island to develop wind energy for export.
Rodd says the wind farms at North Cape and East Point are examples of publicly developed projects that are already putting money back into the public purse, while reducing the Island's reliance on imported energy.
He is calling for public consultations on wind power, a long-term, province-wide site development plan and recognition of the need for varying sizes of wind turbines and wind turbine projects.
Rodd says the NDP believes that the Island has the potential to eventually become self-sustaining in most forms of energy.
