AFTON, N.S. — A relative says the victim of a fatal weekend fire at the Paq’tnkek First Nation in northeastern Nova Scotia was a helpful handyman who lived alone with his dog.
The relative, who asked not to be named called the man’s death ”a shock.”
The man, in his 40s, had gone for a nap shortly before the fire broke out at about 6 p.m. Saturday and quickly engulfed his home, the end unit of a six-unit row house.
RCMP Const. Robert Dykstra of Antigonish County RCMP says the victim’s name will not be released until his identity is verified and family members have been notified.
Firefighters from Pomquet, St. Andrews and Tracadie responded to the alarm, but found that the fire had already filled the building by the time they arrived.
Eight adults and two children who also lived in the complex are now homeless.
